Same Door, Same Log: A Four-Legged Inspector Badges In
The Door You Held
You know the move. Someone is three steps behind you at a locked door, arms full of boxes, and you hold it. Nobody checks. Nobody asks. It feels like kindness, and most days it is.
It is also how a boundary goes soft. The badge reader on the wall was built to ask one question of every person who passes: are you supposed to be here? A held door skips the question. Do it enough times and the reader becomes decoration, a small grey box blinking at a hallway full of courtesy.
Every building has a version of this. The fire door wedged with a folded flyer because the latch sticks. The melt rarely arrives as a break-in. It arrives as a favor.
Soft is where every member starts, and holding the door is a generous reflex. The question is what the door was for.
In County Cork, a machine on four legs has been answering that question more strictly than most of us do.
What the Report Filed
The Robot Report filed it on September 24, 2026. Eugene Demaitre. ANYbotics, the Zurich company behind the ANYmal inspection robot, said it has partnered with dormakaba and LEGIC Identsystems to give its robots automated door access in processing plants. Energy. Metals. Mining. Chemicals.
Unlocked doors got the simple fix. A radar sensor detects ANYmal and triggers a dormakaba ED 100 or ED 250 swing door operator, retrofitted onto the existing door. The door opens. The robot walks through. The door closes behind it.
Locked doors got the interesting one. ANYmal carries a LEGIC security payload that gives it a trusted digital identity. As it approaches a protected doorway, it asks dormakaba's exos system for entry. The system checks predefined permissions and unlocks the door, or it does not. Plant operators can manage the robot with the security systems they already run and limit it to defined zones, operating windows, or inspection tasks.
"With dormakaba and LEGIC, ANYmal can move through doors like any authorized colleague, under the same rules and the same audit trail," said Péter Fankhauser, co-founder and CEO of ANYbotics.
GE Vernova tested it at its Whitegate power plant in County Cork, Ireland. Over several weeks of continuous testing, the companies said, ANYmal kept requesting access, passing through controlled doors, and finishing its inspection routes without manual intervention. Brian Carroll, a maintenance engineer at GE Vernova Whitegate, put it plainly: "By letting the door open automatically for the robot, we can automate routine inspection runs across the entire facility while keeping fire and security barriers intact."
The add-on is slated for current ANYbotics deployments and future ANYmal hardware later this year. Elevators, gates, and turnstiles are being explored next.

The Question at the Threshold
The report asked the awkward question out loud. What happens when a person follows the robot through a door they have no right to open?
Jacob Euler-Rolle, product manager for workflow integration at ANYbotics, answered it. "The robot authenticates and passes through doors just like a badged employee," he said. "Consequently, someone tailgating a robot creates the same security event as someone tailgating a human, triggering the site's standard countermeasures."
Read that twice. The robot is not a gap in the fence. The door does not relax because the thing in front of it has four legs. Slip in behind it without your own credential and the building responds exactly as it would if you had slipped in behind a person.
And every pass is written down. Euler-Rolle said the robot logs each credential scan and transit with a precise timestamp, a clearer record than a door somebody propped open by hand.
That is the part worth keeping. The robot does not walk the plant because someone waved it in. It walks the plant because it asked, the building answered, and the answer went into the record.
A Boundary That Asks
Here is what the surface will make of this story. Robot dog opens doors. A short clip, a quick headline, a comment about the future.
The deeper thing is quieter. A machine was handed the same boundary as the people beside it, and it kept that boundary. It did not need the fire door wedged. Euler-Rolle said fire doors put 30% to 50% of the critical equipment in a process facility behind restricted barriers. The answer was not to tear those barriers out. The answer was to let the inspector carry its own proof and ask.
A carapace works the same way. It is not a wall against everyone. It is a boundary that knows its own seams, opens from the inside, and remembers what came through. The held door, the wedged latch, the favor nobody logged: those are the soft places where the melt gets in, one kindness at a time.
Nobody is asking you to stop holding doors for people with full arms. The shell protects; it never cages. But it is worth noticing which of your own doors have quietly stopped asking. The inbox that lets every sender straight to the top. The evening that opens for whoever knocks first. Each of those had a reader on the wall once. Somewhere along the way, you started holding it open.
At Whitegate, the inspector walks up to the door, asks, waits for the answer, and walks through. Then the door closes behind it.

Close the Latch
Tomorrow, pick one door in your day and let it ask again. One ping that has to earn its way in. One hour that stays shut until you open it on purpose. You do not need a new lock. You only need to stop propping the old one.
