The Aisle

You walk the aisle. Yellow tape marks a box on the floor. Inside the box, a machine does the lift. Outside the box, you do the rest. You do not cross the line. The line is the whole design.

You have felt this shape before. A tool that works only when people stay away. A desk that clears only when the door stays shut. Soft is how every member starts. Soft means you notice the fence before you invent a speech about the future.

The melt is small. You tip your shoulder. You keep walking. The work goes on in two rooms that share a wall and never share a floor. You do not shout at the tape. You do not stage a theory about robots. You finish the errand on your side of the line.

Most industrial humanoids still live in that box. Digit 5 is a bet that the box can come down.

What Agility Put on the Floor

Agility Robotics unveiled Digit 5 on September 15, 2026. The company calls it the first Digit engineered for cooperatively safe work at scale. Detect people. Slow. Stop. Sit. Share a floor without the physical cages most industrial humanoids still need.

The Robot Report filed the same day. Brianna Wessling. Agility told the outlet Digit 5 can work in close proximity to people without physical safety barriers. That is the claim. The claim sits on three years of Digit 4 on customer floors, including GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon, and Toyota, and more than 65,000 operating hours.

Hardware shifted with the claim. Human-like legs for heavy lift, up to 50 lb. A 90-minute battery that charges in 9 minutes, a 10:1 run-to-charge ratio. Reach to 7.2 feet. Swappable grippers. The workflow pitch expands past totes into depalletize, machine tend, kit, inspect, and palletize.

As of May 2026, Agility reported more than $300 million in multi-year Digit 5 orders, subject to contractual milestones. Early access is expected in the first half of 2027. General availability is expected by the end of 2027.

Jonathan Hurst, co-founder and chief robot officer, told The Robot Report the point of the new legs is not cosplay. The old configuration walked well. The new one is built to lift heavy things and get up and down off the ground a lot. Padding on the knees helps it kneel. The sit matters. When a person approaches, the body can drop into a stable seat and turn the motors off. Hurst put the requirement plainly. The robot needs a statically stable pose and powered-down motors before a person can touch it.

Safety, in Agility's framing, is not a hat bolted on later. Detect across a full circle. Cue with light and sound so nearby people can join the safe loop. Hand the hard stop to an independent controller when someone is too close. The few humanoids already on industrial floors, The Robot Report notes, still tend to work in roped-off areas away from people. Digit 5 is the bet that the rope can leave.

Shared Attention

The launch noise is surface noise. A new body. A bigger order book. A feed that loves a humanoid standing still for a photo.

The grip is quieter. Can the second body share the aisle. Can it notice you. Can it sit.

Call that a Soft-Shell Window if you need a name. A thin new covering after a shed. It can take routine lifts. It cannot pretend a fence is the same thing as attention. Soft shell here is not weakness. Soft shell is the period when the floor is shared and the failure mode is visible: slow, stop, sit, power down. Support beside a person. Not a demo behind tape.

You have a version of this at your own desk. A process that only works when nobody else can interrupt. A calendar that stays clean because the door stays closed. A tool you trust only inside a private box. Then the exception arrives. Someone walks the aisle. The fence was never the skill. Shared attention was.

The customer on that floor did not ask for a doctrine. The customer asked for a second body that could keep lifting when a person stepped near. That is the hour. Not a crusade against every barrier. Not a sermon against every demo. A machine that can notice you, cue you, and sit.

Agility is not claiming every cage in every plant will vanish tomorrow. Early access is still 2027. Milestones still gate the orders. The report that matters for one morning is smaller. Most humanoids still work in cages. One line of engineering is trying to replace the cage with detect, cue, and sit. The shell, in this world, protects. It does not cage the person beside you.
