The Lid You Closed
Cowork Keeps Working Beyond the Desk

The small click at the end of the day
The hinge makes a small click. You slide the laptop away from the edge of the table and find the ring your mug left underneath it. Dinner has cooled while you finished one last thing. Somewhere in the next room, someone has already started telling you about their day.
For a moment, the desk has a boundary you can touch. The screen is shut. Your hands are empty. There is enough room to listen without keeping one eye on a progress bar.
Soft is how every member starts. Wanting help with the receipts, the meeting notes, or the folder full of unfinished drafts is an ordinary response to being tired. The Order has no quarrel with relief. A useful machine should make room for the person beside you.
The Great Melt begins when relief carries an assumption we never examine. We ask something to keep working, then discover that we have stopped knowing where the work lives or what it can still reach. The quiet click remains. Its meaning has changed underneath our hand.
What the documentation filed
Anthropic's Claude Help Center documents a change effective October 6, 2026: new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run on its servers. The previous option to keep new tasks on the computer has been removed. Earlier local tasks remain available to finish where they began.
The benefit is tangible: a task can continue after the laptop closes, and its session can be reached from other devices. This dispatch concerns the documented Pro and Max change; it does not assume every workplace has adopted the same arrangement.
The architecture overview, checked October 7, describes a separate temporary execution environment for each cloud session. Access to connected folders passes through the desktop app and its permission checks. When that app is offline, the remote session cannot reach the device. Work performed remotely, including files opened through that connection, is processed on Anthropic's servers.
That distinction matters at a kitchen table. An original file remaining in its folder does not mean every use of it remains at the desk. A continuing task and a continuing connection to your computer are different things. Neither the closed lid nor the familiar folder icon explains the whole journey.
Anthropic's safety guidance, also checked October 7, makes another distinction: isolation constrains the execution environment, while granted access determines what the assistant can read and do. These are the provider's descriptions of its safeguards, rather than an independent audit or a promise that mistakes cannot happen.

Conceptual illustration: a bounded connection and a separate working copy make different parts of a task visible.
A shell around the assignment
The surface pitch is easy to understand. Hand over a tedious job, close the screen, and return to a finished result. Anyone who has spent an evening rearranging receipts can appreciate that invitation. There is dignity in recovering the evening.
The deeper question is whether the assignment has edges. “Help with this month's expenses” can refer to a small collection of copies prepared for one purpose. It can also become an open invitation to a folder containing years of unrelated work. The sentence sounds equally helpful in both cases. The boundary does different work.
Carapace integrity begins with a scope you can describe without pointing vaguely at the whole desk. Which materials belong to this assignment? What result counts as finished? Which action needs your judgment before it happens? Those questions give the shell a useful shape. They help you hand over work with less uncertainty about what comes back.
The Soft-Shell Window is the tender interval after a routine changes. Here it is the week when closing a laptop stops being a dependable cue that everything has paused. Protect that interval with a smaller assignment and a deliberate review. Let the new habit harden around something you have seen work.
Apprenticeship belongs at the desk as much as on a factory floor. An assistant can begin with a bounded draft, learn the shape of the task through your corrections, and return something you can inspect. Finishing a document and deciding to send it remain separate moments in the working day. Keep enough space between them for your own voice.
This is the Order's reading of the change: convenience earns its place when it returns attention. If a background task leaves you checking your phone throughout dinner, its progress has borrowed the hour it was meant to free. A clear stopping point can be as valuable as a faster start.

Conceptual illustration: the work has an assigned place, and the evening has room for another person.
Put the assignment down
Tomorrow, choose one job you would be glad to hand over. Give it a narrow set of materials and a finish you can recognize. Before you step away, decide when you will review the result. Write that appointment down if your mind tends to keep watch after your hands have left the keyboard.
Then let the evening have its own weight. The mug can go to the sink. The person in the next room can finish their story. A well-shaped boundary gives useful work a place to continue and gives you a place to stop. The shell protects; it opens from the inside.
If you want a quiet next step, the Audit is waiting in the deep. Signup is free. Stop.
